What happens when you design a whole game around secrets? How do you make those secrets accessible but fair and challenging to discover? How to you pace out those discoveries to keep the player interested the whole way through? This week on the show I am joined by games journalist Jill Grodt of the Indie Informer to talk about a game that not only answers these questions but sets the standard for how to answer them. We are discussing the indie game Tunic, a wonderful action adventure game from solo game developer Andrew Shouldice and the Tunic Team. Jill and I break down this incredible game over 2 hours and still barely scratch the surface of what it has to offer. I don't normally say this in the episode description but this game is VERY much worth playing before you listen to this episode.

Some games you play because they make your heart race in excitement, others are played to scare you out of your pants, but there are also a ton that are played because they relax you. I like wearing pants so I prefer the last one. This week on the show I am joined by author and games journalist Ryan Janes to discuss his recently released book "The Most Relaxing Video Games". We talk about his inspiration for the book, his selection process and also what his preferred medium to color with is! Make sure you go check out Ryan and his book in the links below.

It's another Patreon poll episode! For this episode my patrons had me play Zillion for the Sega Master System and boy howdy it's a game. I'm joined by Coury from My Life in Gaming and Tiger Chainsaw (check out his YouTube channel!) to talk about Sega's version of Metroid/Impossible Mission. It's a game that had a lot of promise but we were mixed on it's execution. We also take some time to talk about the anime the game is based on. If you would like to help choose future topics for the show as well, join the Still Loading Podcast Patreon and vote in the quaterly polls!

Not ONLY are Dexter Morrill and I covering the Super Mario Super Show but we are also doing the Legend of Zelda cartoon! This was my (Josh's) first time watching the cartoon in earnest and man..... I got opinions. But since the Zelda cartoon aired right after Super Show it felt right to cover it. Join Dex and I's foray into animated Hyrule and all that it entails. Ya'll knew as soon as a Bluey video game came out that there would be an episode on this right? It's finally here. I'm joined by my good friend Jordan Kuhns to talk about everyone's favorite australian heeler and her first foray into gaming. We spend the first portion of the episod talking about the game but the vast majority of it is us talking about our love of the show and everything it means to us. It's truly hard to describe how much this show means to me and I am beyond happy to finally get a chance to talk all about it.

Dual screen action at it's finest! This week on the show we are talking Mario Kart DS, the game in the series that arguably took the Mario Kart games from being popular to being ubiqitous. I'm joined by friends of the show Mono from the podcast Tokyo Game Life and Jiggylookback from his YouTube channel of the same name. HI I'M DAISY! It' episode 3 of Mario Month 2024! This episode is focused on preparing for trouble and making it double, but I'm not talking about Team Rocket. Of course I am talking about Mario Kart: Double Dash! The first and so far only entry in the Mario Kart series that features to characters on kart. Joining me to break down this surprisingly polarizng entry in the series are Veech from the YouTube channel Bite Size Pixel and Mike Laine from the podcast Unlocking What Was Cool. We talk about what makes this game so different and special in the pantheon of Mario Kart games, why Daisy is lovable but obnoxious and how Mario Kart fans are surprisingly like sports fans. I, your loyal host Josh, started Still Loading nearly 10 years ago and I honestly had no idea where it would take me. Apparently it has taken me at least up to episode 300 and soon it will be the 10th anniversary of the show! But let's focus on this episode right here, this is episode 300. I figured the best way to celebrate 300 episodes of the podcast was to do something I've become known for over the past few years, and that is video game fantasy drafts. This is The Super Mario Fantasy Draft.

Joining me to draft their ideal Mario games are 4 wonderful guests, follow them all with the links below!

Following up a groundbreaking title such as Myst is a hard thing to do. Cyan had their work cut out for them, expectations were high. In 1997 they released Riven: The Sequel to Myst where it was met with much critical acclaim. Joining me to discuss how this game holds up now is Try from My Life in Gaming. Try is a huge fan of this game and I had a great time talking about it with him. We break down what we think works still, how the story holds up, the live action cutscenes and much more. At some point I will cover the other games in the Myst series, but for now I feel like this is a good place to leave off.

Myst was game released in1993 from a small studio called Cyan. Despite releasing a few successful games prior, nothing could prepare them for the sucess they found in releasing Myst. It was a landmark title that is considered to be the catalyst for popularizing CD ROM drives on PCs. The game was huge and has influenced many games since, but how does it feel today over 30 years later? I'm joined by Doug Lief from the Nostalgium Arcanum podcast to discuss the iconic point and click and adventure. Join us as we get lost on the island of Myst.

Celeste is a platformer that I think is a prime example of how games can, and should, be considered art. I'm joined by friend of the show Ryan Kern to discuss the iconic indie platformer Celeste developed by Maddy Makes Games. We talk a lot about the game's themes and how those theme's were reflected in the game's creator's personal journey. Celeste is worth trying, even if you don't like 2D platformers. About a year ago I was joined by Rockman Cosmo and Naoya Shinota to discuss their efforts in preserving Japanese feature phone games. Since so much time had passed I wanted to bring them back on the show to talk about how their efforts are going, the progress they made in a year and what their goals going forward are.

I had a wonderful time catching up with them and I can't thank them enough for setting aside more of their time to share what's been going on in their corner of the preservation community.

This year's holiday episode has my wife on it! This week on the show my wife and I chatted about the Living Books games! An edutainment series of interactive storybooks originally published by Broderbund. You all may remember I interviewed Mickey W. Mantle on the show a while ago and he was the CTO of Broderbund at the time Living Books was coming out. Well ever since that episode I've been dying to do a proper Living Books episode and joining me to do so is my wonderful wife Courtney!

Courtney has a degree in early childhood education so I thought it would be interesting to hear from her perspective what the Living Books games to well, where they could improve and what she does/doesn't like about them!

I hope you all will enjoy this episode and I hope you find it interesting.

With every console generation there are bound to be a few games that slip through the cracks that are fantastic, but very few have heard of them. Joining me on today's episode is the founder of Syncoplay Retro Gaming, Joe Bourrie. Syncoplay is an online store that creates accessories for gaming collectors and enthusiasts. Besides founding Syncoplay, Joe is also currently working on a book called Beyond The NES, which is a book that is focusing on the games on Famicom that did not see a release in North America. It is specifically going to target which of those games can be played by English speaking audiences with little to no knowledge of the Japanese language!

The idea of this book is what let to todays topic, the idea that because a game was never localized into English we tend to overlook instead of giving it a chance. In this episode Joe and I each chose 5 games that we feel do not get the love they deserve. If you have a list of 5 games please share it! I would love to see more overlooked and underloved games finally get their due.

It is here. After 2.5 years, Dexter Morrill and I have finally watched and discussed EVERY episode of Captain N The Game Master (minus the clip show episode at the end of season 2...)

This has been a long time coming. Dexter and I started this series as a way to help me keep the podcast weekly after my kid was born and it grew into something we could not have expected. This series was an absolute joy. So much so that recording week became known as Captain N week. This would entail watching the same episode multiple times, a few of which were with my daughter and then laughing about it for over an hour with my friend, the co-host with the mo-host, Dexter. And of course with all this Captain N being watched, my kid loves the show now. Go figure.

I of course need to send a sincere thank you to all of you for listening and following along with this series. It has meant the world to Dex and I and we could not be happier with how it turned out.

Be on the look out for the next cartoon series....

It's been a long while since I had an informal chat on the show. Joining me on this episode is co-founder of Premium Edition Games Barry Carenza. We chat about what its like working as a game publisher, his thoughts on the state of video game preservation and we also dive a bit into our thoughts the habits of gamers and how they have evolved over the years. I really enjoyed this more laid back and chill chat so if you enjoyed this kind of thing and would like to see more of it let me know!
