The console wars of the later '80s and early '90s is the stuff of nostalgia legend. Sega and Nintendo duking it out for video game dominance. While the Genesis/Mega Drive vs the SNES is remembered the most fondly from that era there were other consoles that went head to head as well.... Handheld consoles...
But they all had their lunch money stolen by Nintendo still. Womp womp. However, even in losing to Nintendo's Game Boy there is still a lot you can learn and appreciate about the "loser" handhelds of that era. On this episode of Still Loading I am joined by Gen Moonen from the Fun and Games Podcast to talk about the Sega Game Gear.
In this episode we dive much deeper than this console's battery life (woof 5 hours on 6 AAs). Gen and I talk about why this system is better than people give it credit for, what it did well and what it (obviously) didn't do well and what there still is to explore on the system.

Punch a Nazi month is coming to a close once again and to round it out this year I am joined by games writer and journalist Justin Grandfield to talk about Medal of Honor: Allied Assault!
What makes the old Medal of Honor games so special? Are they able to walk they fine line of reverence for our past while also not glorifying it? Is it still a kickass first person shooter!? Justin and I dissect all of this and more in the finale of Punch a Nazi month. This game was the Medal of Honor game that had eluded me for many years. I only had the console games in the series and was desperate to get my hands on this and play it. When I finally did it did not disappoint.
Play. This. Game.

In World War II the entirety of France was occupied by the Nazi's. The Saboteur, instead of looking at that time period through the lense of the Allied Expeditionary Force, looks at it through the eyes of the people who lived it.
I'm joined by friend of the show Matt Storm to chat about the 2009 open world game The Saboteur. A game where you take control of the character Sean Devlin, an Irish race car driver and mechanic, as he exacts his revenge on the fascists that killed his best friend. What starts out as a simple revenge mission turns into something much larger as he fights to free Paris from the Nazis.
Matt and I ADORED this game and we had a lot of fun chatting about what makes it so great. We also chat about why it seems to be so overlooked and why that may have been. If you want to punch some Nazis you cannot go wrong with this game.
No spoilers for a while, so you can get a feel of the game without having to worry about the story being spoiled.

Punch a N*zi month is back! Three new games all about punching some goddam fascists are being covered and to kick it off I am joined by returning guest, Dave Pietrangelo from Remember 64, to talk about the sequel to the OG FPS game. We are having fun storming the castle with Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein was the first true sequel of the original Wolfenstein 3D since that game had an expansion but not a full-on sequel. Thankfully, even though this game wasn't developed by ID, it is freaking great. This game sticks to a simple FPS formula but it really works. Dave and I had a ton of fun chatting about this one and if you haven't played it yet go punch some N*zis and give it a try.

In the summer of 2000 the Nintendo 64 was on it's way out. The PlayStation 2, the sucessor to the N64 rival PlayStation, was coming out later that year and the GameCube was a still over a year away from release. The summer of 2000 was probably the last chance the N64 had of seriously competing in the console market before the next console generation was in full swing and boy howdy did Rare release a game to help usher out the N64 on a high note.
Joining me this week is YouTuber Jiggylookback to talk about Rare's "sequel" GoldenEye, Perfect Dark. The game was a technical marvel for the time and really pushed the console to it's limits. Perfect Dark took what Rare learned from GoldenEye and expanded upon it. Not just both in terms of tech but also story and atmosphere.
Jiggy and I had a great time chatting about Perfect Dark, why it's still looked on so fondly, where it could improve and also we ask the question... Why the name Elvis?

The finale of Mario Month 2026 is here and it's on a game where you don't play as Mario!? Sort of?
I am joined by Dave Pietrangelo of Remember 64 and Eric Gess of The Unlockables to talk about Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Or better known to all of us normies as, Yoshi's Island. Yoshi's Island is jam packed with whimsy, inventive gameplay, great mechanics and also the worst sound known to man, baby Mario crying.
The three of us break down all we love and don't love about the game, about how Mario's crying is PTSD inducing for 3 grown men with kids of their own now and how this game, even all these years later, continues to leave a mark on gaming.

When Nintendo transitioned from 8 bit to 16 bit, there was a lot of risk. It was not a sure fire thing that the public would adopt a new system, especially one that did not play the games for the existing Nintendo console they already owned. To help entice consumers they had to come out of the gate swinging and there was no harder punch to throw than launching the system with their flagship game mascot. Mario.
For the fourth episode of Mario Month this year I am joined by Zach from the Classic Gaming Brothers podcast and Chris (aka the British Bond Addict) to talk about Mario's jump into the 16 bit generation. We are talking Super Mario World. We discuss what is so special about this game, about the endless Mario 3 vs World debate, the music, the visuals and a whole bunch of nostalgia.

Hey Paisanos! It's the 3rd episode of Mario Month 2026!
This week I am joined by Ty Schalter from the FunFactor podcast and Darren Hupke from Pixels and Polygons to chat about Super Mario Bros. 3! The true (?) sequel to Super Mario Bros.
Mario 3 lives in rarified air as a contender for best Mario game along with Super Mario World (which will be next week's episode!). This debate will be forever ongoing but something that is not up for debate is just how amazing and influential this game was and still is. Ty, Darren and I had so much fun getting to dissect this game and it's mechanics. We also chat about it's visuals, music and some of it's development history!
I don't have a huge personal history with this game in terms of amount of time spent playing it but I do credit this game for being the game that helped me fall in love with video games. The game that made me feel like I was controlling a cartoon on the TV. I don't think I'll ever fully be able to articulate how much this game means to me for that.

For episode 2 of Mario Month 2026 we are talking Doki Doki Pan.... Super Mario Bros. 2. We are talking about Super Mario Bros. 2.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is an interesting entry in the Mario series since, as it has been known for a while it was not originally a Mario game. Joining me to discuss all the ins and outs of the game are two first time guests to the show! Brian Riggsbee of Retro Game Books and Rick Desilets of The D-Pad YouTube channel!
We chat about how this game stands out compared to other Mario games, what still works about it, why the lives system is absolute garbage and more. Where does the US version of Mario 2 rank for you?

The theme for Mario Month this year is back to the classics and I figured what better way to celebrate the Super Mario series than to start out with the OG, The Super Mario Bros.
Joining me on this episode are returning guests Ashton Ruby from the Podcurious and Retro Hangover podcasts as well as Try from the YouTube channel My Life in Gaming. The 3 of us stroll down memory lane and chat about the game that kicked of the Super Mario series in earnest and just how much this game means to us all these years later. We chat about it's enduring legacy and how it is still fun to play today despite some flaws here an there. What else more could be said about Mario? Well we try our damndest to say it.

The finale of The Road to First Light series is here. I am beyond excited for the upcoming James Bond game from IO Interactive and to close out this series I thought it would be appropriate to discuss at least one game that IO developed, the game that got me into the Hitman series, Hitman 2016.
I am joined by Seth from the Classic Gaming Brothers podcast to talk about why this game is so damn good. What makes it unique compared to most other 3rd person action games out there and how it feels like IO is the perfect fit for the Bond license. So grab some coins and some bad acting lessons and join us for this wonderful discussion on Hitman.

We have arrived at the last Bond game being covered in this Road to First Light series. This week on the show we are talking James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing and joining me are two friends who are giving me everything and taking nothing, Bill Barber and Thrak from the 3DO Experience podcast among many others.
This one had some spicier takes than normal on the show. I know this game is beloved by a lot of fans but this one did not do it for me. Thrak and Bill were kind enough to help balance out my views on it though. We talk about what this game does well and what it doesn't, we talk about how much of a Bond game is it really and of course we talk about the wild story that seems to be a staple of the Bond games thus far. Is this game everything or nothing for you!?

I'm joined by friends of the show Mike Laine from the Switch 2 the Past Podcast and Chris (aka The British Bond Addict) to talk about, what is in my opinion, the BEST James Bond game (at least so far). We discuss what new things Nightfire brought to Bond games, how it elavated what it's predecesors did but also where it goes wrong (Im looking at you submarine level).
Does Nightfire still hold up today? Is nostalgia blinding me? Find out in this episode!

The Vita is an interesting system. It feels like it's a system that for those who love it REALLY love it and everyone is neutral at best. What has always interested me about the Vita were all of it's gimmicks and addons. The touch back touch screen, front facing camera, front facing touch screen, back facing camera, gyro controls and so many more. But what interests me the most about it are the games for the system that somehow marry all those gimmicks together in a cohesive package. Gravity Rush is one of those games.
Helping me shift gravity on this episode are first time guests Alex from the Low Five Gaming podcast and community member Soccr. We chat about what makes Gravity Rush so special, how it translated it's handheld controls with all of the gimmicks to the home console that doesn't have all that, just how damn cool the world of Gravity Rush is and so much more. Have you ever wanted to change the laws of gravity? Listen to this episode to see how Gravity Rush does just that.

We are kicking off 2026 with a giant episode! Joining me are friends of the show Chris Coplien from the Retro Hangover Podcast and Mick Arcade from Nerd's Cant to help me rank game console controllers. The inspiration for this episode came from Bitmap Books, who was kind enough to send all of us a review copy of their recently released book Trigger Happy. Trigger Happy is a visual compendium of game controllers so we figured what better way to celebrate videogame controllers than to do a big ranking episode.
We ranked 19 controllers from the NES up to the PS4/XB One/Switch. If the episode already wasn't about 3 hours long we may have considered ranking more. Anyway. Which controller is the highest ranked? Who has the hottest controller take? Listen to the episode and then share your thoughts on our rankings or share your own with us on our socials!

We have come to the end of 2025 and it is time to look back on all the good and bad of the year. And let's be honest, at least here in the US, it was a lot of bad. But the podcast was still a lot of fun so all of that was good! Joining me to look at it all is my brother from the Great White Nort, TJ Hodder of the Hodder Show and Tapes of Trepidation.
We list our most popular episodes, talk about our favorite experiences, share which countries listened to our shows the most and much more!

What happens when Mario goes to space? And what happens when he has to dump his emergency pasta rations!?
In this mini episode Dexter Morrill and I talk about all of this and Koopa's "meteoric balls". This was probably one of the wildest episodes of the Super Show we have seen yet. It goes so many places. Between bad Crocodile Dundee impressions, bizarre space travel and confusing magnetic physics, this episode has it all.

The Super Famicom, known as the Super Nintendo (SNES) here in North America, came out in Japan 35 years ago this year. It was Nintendo's successor to the dominant NES and it marked a real turning point for the games industry at the time. Not just in the evolution of game design but also in the market itself. With the SNES and rival Sega Genesis (Mega Drive outside of North America) fighting for market dominance, it sparked a console war that is still talked about today.
Helping me break this down and more are friends of the show Nadia Oxford and Dan Greenberg! Nadia, Dan and I talk about the world in which the SNES was born into, how it competed with Sega, what games we love on the system and much more!
Now you're playing with POWER.

Every now and then I have an topic that's not necessarily related to games but I am justing DYING to talk about on a podcast. Sometimes I get lucky and can find a loophole to shoehorn that topic onto the show with a loose connection to video games. This episode is on a topic exactly like that.
Joining me for this one, returning guest to the show, is Matt Storm. Matt joins me to talk about Dropout TV, an internet streaming service that just so happens also to have a few browser games that are connected to their shows. Matt and I have a ton of fun talking about why we love Dropout TV, what makes it so special as a streaming service and why the games are... Ok they aren't great, but they are games dammit.
